MARIA MIRAGLIA
AGAIN
It was about noon
and we were sitting
in the shadow
of the willow tree
on the left side
of the house
The heat made us talk
of the weather
and he asked me
of the colors of the leaves
of the morning light
in that season of the year
of the sea waves
we could faintly hear
And the sun
what about the sun
he asked
Fuzzy and blurry his memories
for the long time gone by
I patiently offered him
details and descriptions
of the objects and things
that one after the other
he mentioned
veiled his voice
by a quiet nostalgia
I don’t fear death
he said unexpectedly
when I’m dead
I’ll get back to see
again
*
FALLING DROPS
A rainy summer morning
so unusual here
and me at the window
looking at the falling drops
beating on the roofs of
a still sleeping town
Only few people
down in the street
With me my thoughts
I so often keep
as in a well closed cage
to hold sway over them
But unruly
they go on their own now
freely more than the winds
I can see them go afar
as feathers filling the air
with imaginary figures
happily hovering
for their conquered freedom
And hear them cry loud
asking the emotions and feelings
to come they too to the open
Get yourselves free
they say
and fly high
with us
And I stay silently watching
while my face opens up
to a smile

Dancing Winds, by Maria Miraglia, Writers Capital Press
Foreword
“There is pleasure in the pathless woods, there is rapture in the lonely shore, there is society where none intrudes, by the deep sea, and music in its roar; I love not Man the less, but Nature more.”
Lord Byron
Nature has been a fascination for men since time immemorial and the same has inspired a number of poets to compose timeless creations that has always provoked readers to think and understand the world in a deeper way. Many nature lovers have used poetry to connect with what they experience every time they step out into the open.
Robert Frost, Alfred Lord Tennyson, William Wordsworth, P. B. Shelly, John Keats…there are many who have poets who inspired the world with their splendid poetry on nature. ‘Dancing winds’ a collection of magnificent poetry by one of the finest poets of contemporary literature Dr. Maria Miraglia, once again brings us the memories of those immortal works of world’s greatest poets.
In this impressive anthology of splendid poetry, the Poet elaborates her tremendous discovery of nature in the finest detail, using inspired poetic cadence, metre, startling metaphors, and vivid language, and then vigorously displays it to us in exquisite poetic form. In carefully chosen language, metaphor and rhythm, the poet shares her Poetic Vision in such a way, that it becomes for us a veritable life changing experience.
Beauty and profundity are the most important characteristics of Maria Miraglia’s works that have reflected in many of her works in the past too. Although these elements are found in some of the exceptional works by modern writers, blending them together seems a challenge for many, where Maria is found to be successful applying them into her poetry.
While going through the verses a reader would feel the stunning skill of Maria detailing those minutest expressions of nature which is rather a rare phenomenon considering the nature of contemporary literature. But the careful examination of imageries that she makes use of, reveal subtle elements of poetics that gives vast scope for the analysis of the experts in literature for generations yet to come.
Art may be created simply for the pleasure the artist derives in creation, which is what the phrase conveys, and no doubt an artist is certainly free to do so too. An artist may derive satisfaction from creating art; every artist in every art form from every era would certainly conclude and agree that their creative satisfaction. However many argue that art is complete when it do justice by addressing the subjects of contemporary relevance.
Though the highest value assigned is when art is done by satisfying arts own sake, the vision of humanity of poets has helped the society to bring positive changes. Maria Miraglia’s works often reveals themselves to be beautiful blend of both the beauty of nature and humane values. Dancing Winds must be a perfect example of the same where in several occasions we can see Maria Miraglia’s inner self trying to express the compassion for the world of diminishing humanitarian values. In many poems we can read the poet’s heart that wishes for a world united in love.
The passion to seek beauty in tiniest elements of nature, a sensible heart that listens to the pain and sorrows of fellow being, a vision for a world united in love – perhaps these merits make Maria Miraglia one among the most significant poets of contemporary literature and I am sure time will cherish her works on its voyage to eternity.
I have just a couple of words to describe this book– a modern classic!
