Gould Farm, considered the oldest therapeutic community in the United States, is located near the village of Monterey in the Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts. The Farm currently assists those dealing with major mental illness such as depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. Its principal “therapy” consists of meaningful work for its “guests” in a supportive, rural, community setting. The author grew up at Gould Farm where his parents lived and worked. He now sits on Gould Farm’s Board of Directors. His views do not necessarily reflect those held by the Farm’s administration or its Board.
